Best Communications: Google Doodles

It is not necessary to mention that otherwise simple and clear Google logo occasionally illustrates contemporary events and happenings. It’s called Google Doodles, and its purpose is to remind users of important anniversaries of countries, famous artists, scientists, etc. The very first Doodle was uploaded in 1998 when Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Bing, went to the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. They wished to express through a symbol that their company was “out of office.” The result was a logo with a dancing man, the icon of the Burning Man festival, behind the second “o” in the word Google.

Není třeba zmiňovat, že tu a tam (jinak jednoduché) logo Google ilustruje aktuální událnosti či dění. Oficiálně se tomu říká Google Doodles a mají připomínat oslavy prázdnin, významných událostí, výročí států, slavných umělců a vědců apod. První Doodle vznikl v roce 1998, kdy zakladatelé Googlu Lary Page a Sergey Bing jeli na festival Burning Man v Nevadské poušti, a chtěli prostřednictvím loga vyjádřit, že vedení společnosti je „out of office“. Výsledkem bylo toto logo s tančícím mužem za druhým o, který je ikonou festivalu Burning Man.

The very first Google Doodle

Although it was a simple adjustment, the witty logo received a very positive reaction. Two years later, Larry and Sergey asked their webmaster, Dennis Hwang (at that time, only an intern), to make a Doodle celebrating the anniversary of the fall of the Bastille (14th July). The logo was a huge success and Hwang became an official Google Chief Doodler (still the official name of the position today :-)).

Přestože se jednalo jen lehkou úpravu, vtipně zpracované logo vyvolalo pozitivní reakce. Dva roky později Lary a Sergey zadali současnému webmasterovi, Dennisi Hwangovi (tehdy však pouze stážistovi), vytvořit Doodle pro výročí pádu Bastily (14. července). Logo sklidilo obrovský úspěch a z Hwanga se okamžitě stal Google Chief Doodler (dodnes oficiální název pozice :-)).

At first, Doodles focused on American anniversaries and holidays, and soon they expanded beyond North American borders. The Contemporary Doodles gallery contains more than 1,000 motives, not only in static form, but also as interactive games, (introduced for the London Olympic Games), or recently, as flash animation (introduced for St. Patrick’s Day).

Doodles nejprve oslavovaly americká výročí a oficiální svátky, brzy se však rozšířily za i hranice. V současné době gallerie Doodles obsahuje na 1000 motivů, a to nejen ve formě statických obrázků, ale i jako interaktivních hry (poprvé spuštěné k příležitosti olympiády v Londýně) či nově i jako flashové animace (poprvé zveřejněné na počest irského svátku Svatého Patrika.
